Harris 'Abang', the Logistics Team Supervisor of Serenity Casket & Funerals

Harris, otherwise known as ‘Abang’, a long-time employee of Serenity Casket & Funerals, is known to have a friendly and carefree disposition. Having witnessed the growth and success of Serenity Casket & Funerals from its infancy, Harris has played a crucial role in the company’s rise to prominence in the funeral industry. Today, he continues to work hand-in-hand with the team, offering his invaluable expertise and contributing to the company’s bright and promising future.

Settling down on a simple white plastic chair, ‘Abang’ is in his usual get-up. Dressed in his neatly ironed uniform, complete with the words “Serenity Crew” in the signature colour of Navy Blue. Despite the fast-paced and frenzied activity surrounding him, the man known simply as ‘Abang’ remains calm and collected. In fact, for those working behind the scenes, he is the eye in the storm – a steadfast worker who embodies the essence of order and reliability. “Everyone calls me ‘Abang’,” says the man with a laugh.

He explains that he was born in Malaysia but studied in a Chinese school, which has allowed him to become fluent in Mandarin. He has notably been a part of Serenity’s team for about six years, joining when he was 36. Over this time, he has witnessed the growth and evolution of Serenity Casket & Funerals from a small team to a close-knit family. His experience within the company has given him a professional perspective on the developments of Serenity Casket & Funerals and the impact of its growth over the years.

Beginnings

‘Abang’ recalls that he was previously engaged in tentage and set-up work, only to discover a new opportunity that piqued his curiosity – Serenity Casket & Funerals, a company that was still in its fledgling stage.

Despite his relative experience in another field, he took the leap and decided to become a logistics assistant. With not many hands on deck, ‘Abang’ adapted and took on other roles when the need arose, including funeral assistant duties and admin tasks such as bookings and phone calls. Although unsure of what the future held, ‘Abang’ persevered, determined to learn and grow in his new venture. It was a path uncommon to trek on but ultimately deemed rewarding for him.

A Leader’s Journey

‘Abang’’s journey to becoming a Funeral Assistant was anything but conventional. With determination and guidance from Serenity Casket’s founder, Elson, he took on the challenging role of self-teaching. Even more, he relished the chance to surpass his basic job duties and push his learning to other limits. As he became more skilled, his role evolved, and he now leads a team handling logistics. In doing so, ‘Abang’’s efforts have increased the efficiency and productivity of the funeral home.

‘Abang’’s leadership approach emphasises good communication as a top priority for success. He believes in briefing his team about everything and conducting frequent check-ins, creating an environment where his team members feel comfortable voicing their concerns. Initially, many of them were hesitant to do so – but through his patience and nurturing approach, the barriers slowly dissolved. Thanks to ‘Abang’’s efforts, his team is better equipped to address challenges head-on.

‘Abang’ cited that when the workers first started, he recognised the importance of immersing them in the environment they were working in. So, he brought them along to wakes very early in the mornings where they could observe and experience how other workers in various companies were functioning. This helped them feel more at home in their new workplaces. In time, language barriers were eroded by non-verbal cues and personal mannerisms. He notes that the learning pace of every person is unique, so it’s important to approach each newcomer with empathy and patience. Thus, ‘Abang’ always aims to create a welcoming environment, and this attitude helps him to build lasting relationships with countless colleagues.

Unsettling Experiences

Silence is palpable in his office. It’s evident that everyone is out and about, concentrating on their work. ‘Abang’ begins to recount some of his most vivid and unsettling experiences. Firstly he reveals the old office had been his sanctuary during late nights of exhaustion from dealing with the overwhelming cases of grieving families and bodies. He then recalls his first body transfer, stating that the smell alone is indescribable. Describing the state of decomposition, it is not just fear that ‘Abang’ experiences. He also recounts the emotional impact of handling a deceased baby, an experience that left him visibly upset. As he speaks, it is clear that these experiences have left an indelible mark on him.

He remembers being alone in a quiet hall with one dearly departed person. He had no family beside them, and as ‘Abang’ tried to comprehend the unfortunate situation, he was deeply saddened by the thought that nobody had come to see the person during their last moments. ‘Abang’ muses on the family’s shock at the loss and reflects on how tragic it is to have one’s very last moments be so lonely. His vulnerability is discernible as he looks down at the floor, processing the memory.

Treat Everyone With Kindness

While ‘Abang’ has been through so many funerals and wakes, and has heard countless eulogies, these experiences have taught him a valuable lesson – to appreciate every moment of life. He hears people expressing regrets for not spending more time with their deceased loved one, which ultimately led him to vow having no regrets at all before he departs . That’s why he’s chosen to enjoy every step of his journey, treating those around him with kindness and compassion. ‘Abang’ certainly hopes that everyone else will do the same by cherishing every moment, and being mindful of the precious gift called life we’ve been given. ‘Abang’’s curious yet vastly insightful career choice into the funeral industry has blessed not only himself but many others he has helped and worked with.

It is easy to take life for granted and believe that we have all the time in the world, but the truth is that time is precious and can be gone in an instant. By holding dear to our loved ones and doing what we love, we can make life more enjoyable and unforgettable for everyone. This journey of ‘Abang’ serves as a poignant reminder to all of us that life is short – we should always strive to make the most of it.
